From the Coaches
Coach's Comments

What a week! From our boys triple jumpers opening the Section 8AAA Championships with three state-qualifying performances on Wednesday to our 4x400 relays closing the meet with state-qualifying efforts of their own on Saturday, the Spuds delivered a championship performance from start to finish.

The section meet highlighted the growth and strength of our entire team. The boys scored in 16 of 18 events, totaling 162 points while surpassing numerous personal records and pre-meet goals along the way. Many of those events represented areas for growth entering the season, and tremendous credit goes to the athletes and coaches who embraced the challenge of learning and improving.

The girls matched that effort and then some, scoring in 17 of 18 events. Every one of their 129.5 points proved critical in a thrilling team race that ended with a 6.5-point margin of victory. Persistence and positivity throughout the two-day meet powered the Spud girls to their first section championship since 2005.

There were countless moments worth celebrating throughout the week, and every athlete and coach will have their own favorites. However, none of us will forget gathering on the infield to celebrate with two team championship plaques. It was especially meaningful to share that success across both teams and with the many parents, families, and supporters who made the trip to St. Michael. No one had more fun last week than the Spuds, and we are excited for the opportunities that still lie ahead as we prepare for the final stage of the 2026 track and field season!

The last time both Moorhead teams claimed the Section 8AAA crown together was 2002. Coach Hanson was a little middle schooler at the time. We are not entirely sure if Coach Bieberdorf had been born yet.

Ron's Round Up

Coach Davies was unfortunately too busy taking photos of every single event to be caught on video this week. The good news: the Section 8AAA coaches noticed the work, even if the cameras didn't. Ron was named Section 8AAA Coach of the Year, joined on the honor roll by his idol, Brody Clarke, as Assistant Coach of the Year. Sources also report Ron was spotted at section meet in his White Hot Ron outfit, which he breaks out only when he is trying to scare people.

The Week Ahead
MSHSL Class AAA State Meet
Thursday, June 4 + Saturday, June 6 · St. Michael-Albertville HS

State Meet week is the most fun meet of the year. Outstanding performances are guaranteed, teams and athletes will defend titles and chase new ones, state records will be set (perhaps by our own Spuds), and fans will be treated to a great high school track venue at St. Michael-Albertville.

The Spuds are bringing the deepest state-meet roster in at least several decades, and dare we say, perhaps the most qualifiers in program history. Among the storylines worth flagging: six different Spud boys are qualified across the long jump and triple jump. We think there is a decent chance no Minnesota team has ever sent six athletes in the horizontal jumps to the state meet at once. Jumpstown, MN will be making the trip to STMA.
