Coach's Comments
Packer Relays

We are excited to celebrate our TEAM this week! On Tuesday, the Moorhead Invitational offers a final opportunity for our entire team (girls and boys, JV and varsity) to compete at the same meet. Our student-athletes are excited to compete in front of friends and family!

On Friday, both the girls and boys teams will compete at the True Team State Meet in Eden Prairie. The girls advanced by winning their second straight section 8AAA title, while the boys earned their third consecutive state berth. Twelve girls teams and twelve boys teams qualify for the True Team State Meet, which aims to identify the strongest (deepest) team in the state. Moorhead is one of seven schools to qualify both their girls and boys teams for the state meets, and we are one of very few that share meets, practices, and coaches across a combined girls and boys program. No one should feel more team spirit on Friday than the Spuds and their fans!

Our team's success is not possible without a strong team of supporters. Thanks to parents, families, and others that provide resources, encouragement, and guidance for our students athletes. You are making a difference!

The Spuds host Bemidji, Fargo North, and Crookston at MHS, with seniors honored before the meet. Bemidji brings section foe energy and a number of strong individuals -- a worthy tune-up before state.

Keep an eye out for the open 600 -- a race we don't typically run during the season, but a staple at the Moorhead Invite. Always entertaining.

Spud History

Eden Prairie isn't new territory for the Spuds. Since the True Team meet began in 1987, the Moorhead boys have qualified for state 15 times and the girls 13 times -- one of the most decorated True Team programs in Minnesota.

A bit of orange-and-black history worth noting: in 38 years of True Team, the 2004 Moorhead boys are the only non-metro program to win the top class, on either the boys or girls side. Coach Hanson was on that team.

The best track teams in Minnesota gather in Eden Prairie. Some Spud fans are hoping for better weather than last year's deluge -- though Coach Asfeld yearns for some Spud Weather to give us an edge.

Stillwater (boys) and Wayzata (girls) return to defend their titles. The Blaine Bengals were cross country champs in the fall and are likely one of the stronger boys teams in the field. The field is loaded with too many strong individuals to name. This will be one of the most fun meets of the year.

Ron’s Round Up

Ron's Round Up returns with two episodes -- Ron at Packer Relays, and Coach Asfeld stepping in for True Team.

Ron was last seen near the pole vault pits, again. With a wind advisory pushing the Moorhead Invite indoors on Tuesday, the pole vault is moving inside too -- which means Ron's preferred hiding spot is now in the building. Who knows what he might encounter.

Section 8AAA True Team Champions -- back-to-back
Girls: Moorhead 810 - 1st  |  Boys: Brainerd 833.5, Moorhead 824 - 2nd (Wild Card In)

The Spud girls are Section 8AAA True Team Champions -- back-to-back. Moorhead finished with 810 points to Alexandria's 775 and Brainerd's 772, a 35-point margin built on the kind of depth True Team scoring rewards. The girls won six event groups and finished top three in nearly every other event. Eden Prairie is next.

The boys came up just short in a great battle with Brainerd, finishing 2nd at 824 points to Brainerd's 833.5. The Spuds won six event groups of their own and put together a tremendous day -- Brainerd just had a tremendous day too. The wait is over: Moorhead grabbed a wild card berth and is heading to Eden Prairie alongside the girls.

See Coach's Comments above for the stories behind the scores.
