Outdoor Season
Underway.
Two meet titles, three school records, and a lot of ground covered in the first two weeks outdoors.

Coach's Comments

The Spuds have enjoyed an action-packed start to outdoor competition! Two weeks ago, we swept the JV (Eagle Invite) and varsity (Eagle Relays) team titles at meets hosted by Fargo Davies. The Spuds brought great energy to these initial outdoor meets. The team sweep at the Eagle Relays was a program first - which is a major accomplishment at a strong meet we have been attending for over a decade.

Last week, the Sheyenne Invitational gave nearly two hundred Spuds an opportunity to compete together. We showcased depth across many events in capturing team wins. The week was capped with record-setting performances and victories at the Hamline Elite Meet in St. Paul.

As the calendar turns to May, we are beginning an exciting time of the season. Our last few regular season meets offer opportunities for our entire team to chase personal and season-best performances together. Our first championship meet of the season - the True Team Section Meet on May 5 - is also just a few days away.

We are about to enter a busy time for many student-athletes. Academic, social, and athletic calendars are full this time of year, and student-athletes are encouraged to maintain great habits away from practice so they can maximize these opportunities (rest is one of these great habits!). Parents and families are a big part of supporting their efforts. Thanks for your part in our success!

West Fargo Packer Relays

Courage Sayiah

A strong local field with plenty of familiar faces. The Spuds will use the Packer Relays to fine-tune their lineup heading into the postseason - getting athletes in the right events, testing relay combinations, and staying sharp. The boys come in on an undefeated streak outdoors. The girls have yet to lose outdoors this season - one loss and one tie indoors, but clean since the outdoor season started. Both sides have something to protect.

Some athletes to watch from other teams: Owen Johnson of Northern Cass has been one of the standout distance runners in the field, with strong marks across the 800, 1600, and 3200. Luka Rout of Davies is a sophomore running right with him. On the girls side, Kia Ray of Sheyenne has been competitive in the 100, 200, and long jump and will match up directly with the Spuds' sprint crew.

Section 8AAA True Team - Brainerd
Tuesday

The Spuds head to Brainerd as defending True Team champions to face Bemidji, Brainerd, Sartell, Alexandria, Buffalo, Monticello, Sauk Rapids-Rice, St. Cloud Tech, and others. Brainerd and Alexandria figure to be among the strongest challengers on both sides of the meet, and it should be a competitive day top to bottom.

Some top athletes to watch from other teams: Gus Staryszak of Monticello competes in the 100, 200, shot put, and discus at an elite level - genuinely rare. Tristan Lenton of Buffalo is a quality distance runner on the boys side. Rose Lamberts of Buffalo is a strong sprinter and hurdler. Isabelle Mahoney of Monticello is one to watch in the girls distance. Brainerd brings a strong jumps crew, Sartell has depth in the sprints on both sides and will be competitive across the board, and Alexandria is consistently strong in girls distance events.

One thing to remember with True Team: every individual scores. Every last-place finish picks up a point. Every battle in every event matters. The team that competes top to bottom - not just at the front - wins True Team. That's who we want to be - and Tuesday is a chance to go out and show our depth with another True Team championship.

Three school records in the span of a week. At the Eagle Relays, Zak Walker broke the school record in the long jump with a 24'8" - a mark that also ranks 5th all-time in Minnesota. Legendary Spud Fan Shawn Gruenberg was working the pit and had a front row seat. Then at Hamline, Zak ran 10.57 in the 100 (school record, 3rd) and 21.36 in the 200 (school record, 2nd) against a statewide field.

Ron’s Round Up

Outdoor season is here and Ron has made it to every meet so far. The drive from Detroit Lakes remains long. The dedication remains unmatched. The wardrobe remains a topic of public debate.

At Davies I wore the orange pullover - a classic, a beacon, a choice. Families have started tracking the outfits. I have been informed there is a group chat. What I can tell you is that the blackout look, the White Hot Ron ensemble, and the orange pullover are all still in rotation, and selection criteria remain classified. The Coach Who Shall Not Be Named and I are dressing independently and will not be coordinating.

What I will say is this: Shawn Gruenberg showed up to the Eagle Relays in an orange shirt, stood six feet from the long jump pit, and watched Zak Walker break the school record on repeat. Some people have all the luck. See you at the track. Ron was unavailable for comment at press time. He was last seen near the pole vault pit.

West Fargo Packer Relays - Preview
Friday - West Fargo, ND  |  Results to follow

The Spuds head to West Fargo on Friday for the Packer Relays - a strong local field and a good opportunity to fine-tune the lineup before the postseason begins. The boys carry an undefeated streak outdoors and the girls have yet to lose outside - one loss and one tie indoors, but clean since the outdoor season started.

Boys: Moorhead 123.5 - 1st  |  Girls: Moorhead 125.5 - 1st

The Spuds came to Davies and won on both sides. The Eagle Relays uses a relay-format scoring system where individual event marks are combined and scored as team totals alongside traditional relays - a team title here is a full-roster effort. The boys won with 123.5 points, the girls with 125.5, edging Davies at 115 - marking the first time in program history Moorhead has won the Eagle Relays on both sides.

The sprint relays were dominant on the boys side. The 4x100 of Madison Suah, Zak Walker, Edmund Wotoe, and Espen Bement ran 42.38 - the top 4x100 mark in Minnesota at the time, which currently sits 5th all-time. They came back to win the 4x200 in 1:29.24. The 4x400 of Wyatt Myklebust, Tavan Schlichting, Eli Schlichting, and Zak Walker won in 3:33.50, and the 4x800 of Oliver Carlson, Dylan Riepe, Eli Schlichting, and Conner Copeland took the title in 8:31.49. Freshman Courage Sayiah won the triple jump at 43'3" with Edmund Wotoe and Charles Martin right behind - three Spuds in the top three. Wes Brouillard won the 1600 at 4:59.81. The DMR of Dylan Riepe, Dalton Jones, Oliver Carlson, and Brouillard won in 11:41.27.

On the girls side, freshman Lillian Humeniuk and her sister Audrey both ran legs on the winning 4x400 (4:08.86) and 4x800 (10:03.07). Romedna Gaye, Kaityn Walthers, Nadia Davis, and Quinn Erickson won the 4x100 in 49.24, and Davis, Ruby Zielinski, Erickson, and Walthers took the 4x200 in 1:44.98. Brooklyn Johnson won the 1600 in a season best 5:44.50 with four Spuds in the top seven. Isabelle Oakes was one of the last athletes still competing as pole vault went long, clearing 9'3" for a personal best to close out the day.
